Types of Driving Licenses in Karnataka

Driving License for Motorcycles without Gear:

This type of permanent Driving License is given to candidates for driving motorcycles and two-wheelers without gear like scooters and mopeds. The applicant must be of age 16 and above to apply for this type of license.

Driving License for Light Motor Vehicle:

This is conferred to those individuals applying for a license for driving light motor vehicles such as bikes and cars. The legal age to apply for this type of license is 18 and above.

Driving License for Transport Vehicles:

Those who want to be able to drive transport automobiles such as cabs, private service vehicles, lorries, trucks, and trailers should go for a permanent Driving License for transport vehicles. In Karnataka, Driving License for transport automobiles is generally meted out to applicants of age 20 and above.

Below are the procedures to get Driving license:

  • To get a license, first, you need to take LLR from the RTO office.
  • After the required documents (passport sized photos, residence address proof, ID proof etc.) are submitted, you will get a slot for giving your preliminary test to check how familiar you are with the regulations, traffic laws and road rules.
  • Once you have passed the test, a learner’s license will be given to you.

  2. An attested copy of any of the following:

  5. Photographs (6 Passport sized photographs for learners license, 1 Passport sized photograph for your driving license)

Eligibility to get a driving license

  • You must be a minimum age of 18 years or above to apply for your permanent license and be able to lawfully drive your private motor vehicle.
  • You must first acquire a valid learner’s license.
  • You must submit the application form after a minimum period of 30 days and within 180 days of the date of the issue mentioned on your learner’s license.
  • If you are a minimum age of 20 years old and already possess your Learner’s License, you could even apply for commercial vehicle license.
